The Cornell Store's Ithaca-area branch retail locations consist of two brick-and-mortar retail stores. Our Ithaca Commons location is located on the award-winning Downtown Ithaca Commons, a four-block pedestrian shopping area with over 100 unique shops, restaurants, street vendors and street entertainers. Additionally, the Shoppes at Ithaca Mall location serves customers and visitors in a traditional retail mall location just minutes from the Cornell University campus. The combined retail sales portfolio for both locations is ~$1 million in total annual sales.
The Retail Sales Specialist will support the Retail Leads and Retail Store Manager by providing front-line assistance in the following areas:
Sales and Service - Greeting and welcoming customers and guests, demonstrating ‘active selling’, providing product information and guidance, and ensuring a high-quality customer service experience
Point of Sale Support - Operate computerized cash registers, assist customers with check-out, and execute appropriate cash handling procedures. Process returns and issue credits when requested.
Visual Merchandising – Assisting in maintaining the appearance of the sales floor, setting up seasonal promotions/visual displays, regularly monitor assigned areas for product restocking and recovery, and keep merchandise orderly and neat in appearance.
Inventory Support – Receive and process incoming merchandise and assist with special orders and store-to-store shipping requests
Training - Assist in the training and guidance of student and temporary employees.
Success in this role includes the ability to operate in a fast-paced environment both independently and as a team player as well as being able to multi-task effectively through multiple priorities. Additionally, it's important to consistently demonstrate strong customer service skills and be able to work with, and support, a variety of customers, visitors, clients and staff. In this role, it's important to be flexible as the schedule may change based on business needs and may include some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
High school diploma or equivalent with at least one year of experience in a retail environment or an equivalent combination or education and experience. College coursework, Associates degree or other formal training is preferred.
Competency with computer/systems use.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated passion for customer service
Ability to occasionally climb ladders and lift and/or move 25-50 pounds as needed.
Additional work experience in business management, hospitality, fashion/design, and or other related fields.
Prior experience with point-of-sale (POS) systems
