The Bear Necessities Retail Manager/Buyer (BNRM/B) oversees the annual stock plan and daily operations of the Bear Necessities store on the South 40 residential campus. The retail manager ensures smooth running of operations to maximize sales and minimize costs.
The BNRM’s goals are to increase revenues, center the store as a daily resource for everything (except books) that students and the WUSTL community need, and to promote the scholarship opportunities and student project funds the store supports through a unique partnership with the Women’s Society of WU.
Experience as a store manager and buyer of diverse product classifications (logoed apparel/gifts, health and beauty supplies) and knowledge of different business areas such as sales, marketing and purchasing, are a part of the daily and strategic planning of the BNRM. An effective BNRM will also be able to hire and motivate student staff who will perform tasks according to the needs of the store, including trend style merchandising, social media marketing and great customer service to the WUSTL student and campus community.
Buyer - purchase products, analyze sales, revenue reports and trends to make forecasts and maintain inventory by implementing purchasing plans. Stay in contact with vendors and shippers. Receive, monitor, report all shipments into POS database for sales & inventory. Keep abreast of market trends to determine the need for improvements in the store.
Manager –Oversee store operations, delegate responsibilities to student staff. Hire, train, supervise, and guide student staff towards maximum performance in store operations. Establish standard operating procedures manual, update and refresh annually. Maintain regular store inspections and resolve any issues that might arise. Ensure the store fulfils all legal health and safety guidelines
Marketing - Create an annual strategy plan for maximizing store sales via a calendar of marketing and events to increase in-person traffic and online ordering. Plan and oversee in-store promotional events or displays.
Monitor & keep web store fresh & up to date.
Financial - Annually prepare and manage the store’s budget aiming for minimum expenditure and high efficiency. Fulfill annual PCI compliance audit and report quarterly to WSWU/Aux Business on financial status of store inventory and sales. Prepare and conduct an annual report of physical inventory and final annual profit.
Customer service- Promote and provide training to improve the knowledge base of the student staff for excellent customer service. Deal with complaints from customers to maintain the store’s reputation.
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field preferred with a minimum of 3 years of experience as a retail store manager/buyer with emphasis on retail to include apparel and health & beauty supplies, institutional or related setting.
