About Us
In 1958, the Guilford Industrial Education Center (GIEC) opened its doors, and what is now known as GTCC was born. GIEC began the fall semester with 42 students enrolled in classes and ended with 593 students enrolled. The center was founded with the purpose of increasing technical skills of unskilled workers in order to create a sustainable, industrial workforce. From its humble beginning as North Carolina’s “first training school, established through the cooperative efforts of education and industry” (1955), to the opening of the (Piedmont) Guilford Industrial Education Center (GIEC, 1958), through its maturation as Guilford Technical Institute (1965), to its flagship status as a comprehensive community college (1983), GTCC is still, as former president Dr. Luther E. Medlin proudly proclaimed in 1972, “Guilford County’s most unique educational institution.” Today, Guilford Technical Community College offers more than 80 programs of study and continues to support success through innovative education, training and partnerships. The college offers associate degrees, diplomas and certificates as well as noncredit courses in professional development, personal enrichment, job training, career development and basic education. As the third largest of 58 community colleges in the North Carolina Community College System, GTCC serves more than 40,000 students annually from its Jamestown, Greensboro, High Point, Aviation and Donald W. Cameron campuses as well as its Small Business Center in Greensboro and High Point.
